Evidently, in MacOS 10.6.8, one must reboot and then install DPS before one plays any sound, then one reboots again.

If one plays any sound from any application other than DPS itself, then the installation will fail. This isn't in the installation instructions, which say simply to install then reboot. That works in the case that one's Mac has not played a sound (except via DPS) since its last reboot. This case would occur, of course, in the DPS software development lab, where reboots would be rather frequent and most sounds likely played via DPS, and so the installation would work. However, the general Mac owner may typically not have rebooted for months, and during the interim played many sounds, none through DPS because he hadn't it. Thus, the installation failure would be seen in the field, and not the lab. Too bad the tacky installation issue; it's a really cool product.
