You can use it with your mp3 player or on your computer and they sound great either way. Although if you have low quality mp3s you can actually hear the imperfections with these. The case that comes with it is also great, I use it every day for transporting it. The surround your ear as apposed to just sit on your ear and make them sweaty. It's the best quality headphones that Sony makes for the price. The only thing that I would improve about them is the padding. It feels a bit like the padding you would see on cheaper headphones.
Even the v700's have better quality padding, but if you care about sound quality it's not a big worry. Make sure you order from B&H to insure you get a legit pair and not knockoffs. My 6yo twin daughters have taken a liken to them for playing their electronic drum set, after months of abuse they are still as good as new. Genuine SONY MDR-7506 Studio Monitor Headphones in very good condition. These are vintage and a rare example of these particular headphones- made in Japan. In Sony's glory days- the 1980's! Newer ones are made in Taiwan or elsewhere.
